But she had to give something up in return, in Sumire’s case, her identity and pain. Ariel is also very selfish of her refusing to go back to her past, which is fitting for Sumire. Also, the ending fits better because, in the end, she doesn’t really return to her old self. She still wears Kasumi’s signature ponytail, she doesn’t wear glasses anymore, but she makes peace with her past.
