Star Wars fans will be going to the theater sooner than expected thanks to the announcement of a new movie.

December 2019 was the last time that a Star Wars film was released in theaters, but that all will soon change.

During Star Wars Celebration 2023, a brand-new future slate was revealed, including three feature films that will be coming to the big screen sometime over the next 10 or so years.

Star Wars Announces New Mandalorian Movie

Star Wars recently announced via its official website that a brand new feature film titled The Mandalorian and Grogu will go into production sometime later in the 2024 calendar year.

It was revealed that The Mandalorian‘s Jon Favreau will be directing and producing the upcoming release. Dave Filoni and Kathleen Kennedy will also be credited as producers.

Another small detail that was included in the announcement is that The Mandalorian and Grogu will be at the head of Star Wars’ upcoming movie slate, meaning that it will be the next Star Wars title to be released in theaters.

Here is the full upcoming slate of Star Wars films:

The Mandalorian and Grogu

The Mandalorian and Grogu may have only just been announced but it will be the first Star Wars movie to be released in theaters since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

With the announcement of The Mandalorian and Grogu, many fans are instantly questioning whether or not The Mandalorian Season 4 will still be released or if the upcoming movie will replace it.

According to a recent report from Deadline, the two projects are completely separate, meaning that Season 4 of the Disney+ show is still in development and will not be affected by The Mandalorian and Grogu. In the same report it was also noted that Pedro Pascal may not reprise his role as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian.

Pascal is extremely busy working on other projects such as HBO’s The Last of Us and was notably barely even on set during filming for The Mandalorian‘s prior seasons. While this bit of information could be alluding to Pascal not being present on set at all for Season 4, it is also possible that he will not be playing Din Djarin at all.

However, it is important to note that neither Disney nor Lucasfilm have officially commented on Pascal’s status.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Star Wars Movie

Before the announcement of The Mandalorian and Grogu, many fans thought that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s upcoming film would be the next movie set in the galaxy far, far away.

It is currently untitled, but it was confirmed to feature the return of Daisy Ridley’s Rey. It is also worth noting that Obaid-Chinoy will make history as the first woman to ever direct a Star Wars film.

Not much is known about the upcoming film’s story aside from it being set 15 years after the events of the Rise of Skywalker, but it was recently reported that writer Steven Knight already gave his final draft of the script to Lucasfilm, meaning that the project could be getting close to going into production.

Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Movie

Like Obaid-Chinoy’s film, Dave Filoni’s upcoming feature has also not yet been titled (although many fans theorize and hope that it will be called Heir to the Empire).

Not much is known about the exact plot of Filoni’s entry on the upcoming release slate, but it will be a crossover event that brings together all aspects of the MandoVerse that is currently being fleshed out on Disney+.

Characters that have played major roles in the MandoVerse are expected to appear such as Din Djarin, Grogu, Bo-Katan Kryze, and Boba Fett.

Eman Esfandi, who portrayed the live-action version of Ezra Bridger in Ahsoka, recently claimed that he expects to reprise his role in the upcoming film as well.

James Mangold’s Star Wars Movie

Although it is still fairly far off due to James Mangold having to first attend to other projects such as his feature about Bob Dylan and Swamp Thing, many fans are excited about his upcoming Star Wars movie.

Once again, there aren’t many details about what will occur in the film, only that it is set tens of thousands of years before the Skywalker Saga and will focus on the first Jedi.

The Mandalorian can be streamed now on Disney+.
